I would not recommend this set for any reason.I ordered this set and the one offered by ron popeil for the same price. The Popeil set had more items and was just a more substantial product. My miracle III knives have rust stains and the small chopper is so thin that it is nicked.Plus, the sets were $39.00 when they were made in the USA.Now they are made in china and sell for the same price.Do not be fooled by the wonderful television ad's.the set from popeil is far superior and the same price.

update:10 mar 05.these people are impossible.my knives are RUSTING.stainless steel!!!!!!!!i called miracle blade two months ago.they were going to send me a new set. That was after being cut off 3 times.their computers were down.i called them again the other day and was told their computers were down.finally i called and said i wanted to place an order and it was a miracle, the computers suddenly came up.i finally demanded a supervisor, none available.i was told i would have to pay $29.00 for the warranty.i laughed.i had to pay $14.99 for shipping.they are just sleezy.look into sharpkut II.they are great knives.i have had one for twenty years.i thought that miracle blade was the same company.NOT.sharpkut II knives are made in the USA and don't rust.trust me.stay away from miracle blade.

Victorinox 47547 10-1/4-Inch Wavy Bread Knife, Black Fibrox Handle Review

Victorinox 47547 10-1/4 inch Wavy Bread Knife, Black Fibrox Handle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After six weeks of ownership of this knife (Forschner 40547) I can tell you it is mislabeled. It is called a "Bread Knife," but it should be called a "Bread, Meat, Carving, Sandwich, and Other Stuff Knife."

Here's how I made a sandwich a few minutes ago.Use knife to slice large rye bread.Use knife to slice some corned beef into slices so thin you can't pick them up with your fingers.Go ahead and use same knife to swab some mayo onto the bread.Use knife to slice sandwich in half (duh).Use knife to pick up two sandwich halves from cutting board. That's five uses for one sandwich, and not one other utensil needed.

The edge is still deadly sharp.

The Fibrox handle gives a good, solid grip.

The curved edge allows you to cut through only the very center part of a tough bottom crust. And if you draw the knife straight across, say, a slice of soft bread, the curve causes the knife to act as a guillotine as it enters the leading edge of the victim, which reduces tearing.

Although I haven't tested it because my little brother does all the fancy knife-work at family get-togethers, my guess is that this knife would carve a turkey or a smallish emu just dandily.

At a total length of 15 inches, this will likely be the longest knife in your collection, so I'm not saying it would be your first choice for slicing an olive. But if you can learn to handle a knife this long, it does a lot more than slice bread, and it does it well.

My only complaint is that the top edge of the blade is also curved, so you can't use it to scrape a cutting board of its contents. But maybe there's a design reason for that that I don't know about.

I wish I had owned this knife 20 years ago.

Update of December 2007: The more I have this knife, the more I realize how often I reach for it first among the five knives I use.

Update of January 2009: Still sharp, still a favorite.

Product Description:
From the inventors of the famous Swiss Army knife comes a line of fine cutlery designed for accomplished and aspiring chefs at work or in the home. Each blade in the Stamped collection is expertly made in Switzerland from high-carbon stainless steel and undergoes a special tempering process for an edge that can be resharpened again and again. The result is a knife that can keep its original sharpness throughout the entire life of the blade. Each blade is conical ground throughout its length and depth, and laser tested to ensure optimum cutting power and durability. Ergonomically designed to minimize wrist tension, the unique, patented Fibrox handles are slip resistant when wet. Plus, all Stamped cutlery with Fibrox handles is approved by the National Sanitary Foundation (NSF). Although cutlery steel is naturally sanitary, materials and construction details of these handles minimize crevices that may otherwise offer hospitality to bacteria. The Victorinox Stamped collection is an extensive range with open-stock pieces as well as handy and versatile sets.
This bread knife features a 10-1/4-inch wavy-edge blade that is 1-1/4 inches wide at the handle. A specialty knife with a wide variety of uses, its scalloped-edge teeth can cut through harder crusts or peel without squashing tender insides. The specially designed wavy edge provides 40 percent more cutting edge in contact with the product than with a traditional plain-edge knife. Made to the same exacting standards, the wavy edge is designed to provide the perfect cutting-edge profile for cutting items such as bread, gateaux, and pastry products. The edge requires no sharpening, so is ideal for fast-food outlets, busy canteens, and restaurants. All Stamped cutlery should be washed by hand for best care, and Victorinox covers each piece with a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects.
From the Manufacturer
Who is Victorinox?
Although Victorinox is known the world over as the creator of the Original Swiss Army Knife, the company started out in 1884 as a cutlery workshop. By the time company creator Karl Elsener delivered his first pocket knife to the Swiss Army, his cutlery business was already booming. Over the next century, Victorinox cutlery became a top-rated choice among professionals worldwide, with over 300 blades to offer.
Victorinox knives have regularly appeared as highly ranked and recommended kitchen tools in Cook's Illustrated, Men's Health, The Cincinnati Enquirer, New York Magazine, and Natural Health, just to name a few. In 2009, the company announced a partnership with professional chef, Daniel Humm, of Eleven Madison Park in New York City. In addition, building on the success of its cutlery business, Victorinox has brought all the same quality and expertise to a wider range of products and accessories, including other kitchen tools, pocket tools, watches, luggage, and clothing.
Who is R.H. Forschner?
Victorinox had been a staple in European commercial cutlery for over 50 years when approached by New York's R.H. Forschner, known since 1855 as a builder of scales for butchers, to be their sole cutlery supplier. The two companies joined forces in 1937, and R.H. Forschner subsequently became North America's dominant professional brand, as ubiquitous in the bustling meatpacking plants of the Midwest as it is in the gleaming, four-star restaurant kitchens of Midtown Manhattan.
As a division of Victorinox/Swiss Army Brands, R.H. Forschner marketed cutlery under the brand name "RH Forschner by Victorinox" and distributed to the commercial, food service, and retail trade classes. That brand has been considered a top choice of professionals worldwide with over 300 styles of blades bearing the R.H. Forschner name. However, in 2009, in conjunction with Victorinox's 125th anniversary, the company, Victorinox Swiss Army, Inc., has decided to remove the "RH Forschner" name from all blades. Blades thenceforth only include the "Victorinox" name.
What is a stamped blade?
A stamped knife can usually be identified by the absence of a bolster. Stamped blades are cut into their shapes from cold-rolled pieces of steel and then ground, tempered, and sharpened. Creating them requires many less steps than forging and results in lighter, narrower blades. Some professionals prefer the thicker, heavier forged blades, but many pros, who spend much of their day cutting and slicing, enjoy a lighter knife since it's less fatiguing and easier to manipulate at speed.
Stamped knives are easier to produce and therefore less expensive. They perform very well and can approach the quality of a forged blade, but not the weight or feel. Victorinox manufactures a complete range of stamped blades with unique, patented Fibrox handles and they are considered among the greatest values in the knife industry.
What knives do I need to own?
Knife choice or selection is determined by many factors--size, function, style, and preference. The most important factor is function. Different knives have different uses. It is important to use the proper knife for a specific task, since proper knife selection and the use of a proper-sized, sharp knife make for safe cutting. General kitchen tasks and the knife to use for them are as follows:
Paring: The most common to own and use, a paring knife is generally for small cutting jobs and peeling of vegetables or fruit. The blade size is usually from three to four inches. Choose the shape and size to fit your hand. Since this is one of the more versatile knives, owning more than one is recommended.
Chef's: The most important tool and essential to every cook, a chef‘s knife is most often used in a rocking method to mince, dice, and chop vegetables and herbs. This one is known as the chef's best friend.
Slicer: Most commonly used to slice meats, poultry, and seafood, the slicer is an important companion to any host or hostess.
Boning: As its name suggests, a boning knife is used to trim or remove meat and fish from the bone.
Bread: Designed with a special edge, a bread knife makes easy work of cutting through crusty bread, pastries, or any item with a crust and a soft interior.
Fillet: Most often used by pros and seasoned home chefs, the fillet knife is used to fillet meat and fish.
Cleaver: An important addition to any collection, a cleaver is often used to cut or chop through bones.
Santoku: This knife combines the features of a cleaver with a chef's knife. The curved blade helps the rocking motion used for chopping, and the wide blade works well for scooping sliced food off a cutting board and for crushing garlic. The santoku can also be used to slice meat and has a narrow spine for making thin cuts.
Utility: An all-purpose knife often referred to as a sandwich knife, the utility knife peels and slices fruits and vegetables, and even carves small meats.
Shaping: With its curved blade, a shaping knife is great for small precision cuts where control is essential, such as peeling, trimming, or garnishing.
What are the different knife edges and what do they do?
Straight: The vast majority of Victorinox knives come with a straight or fine edge. This means it has a perfect taper along the blade and no serrations. It is designed to cut without tearing or shredding.
Serrated: An edge designed with small, jagged teeth along the edge.
Scalloped: A blade with waves along the edge generally used to cut breads with a hard crust and soft interior, as well as tougher-skinned fruits and vegetables.
Granton: This edge has hollowed-out grooves or dimples on the sides of the blade. These grooves fill with the fat and juices of the product being cut, allowing for thin, even cuts without tearing. Even with the grooves, these are still straight-edge knives and can be honed with a sharpening steel.
How should I care for my cutlery?
After use, knives should not be allowed to soak in water. The best practice is to hand wash and dry them immediately. This is especially true if they have been used on fruit or salty foods, which may cause some staining, even on stainless steel. Most knives require very little maintenance and it is worth the effort to protect your investment.
Though Victorinox knives are dishwasher safe, this is strongly discouraged. The dishwasher's agitation may cause damage. Additionally, harsh detergents can be harmful and cause pitting and spotting on the blades. The handles may also discolor and develop a white film with constant use of the dishwasher. Plus, intense heat associated with dishwashers is not good for the temper of the blade.
How do I keep my knives sharp?
All quality knives require proper maintenance to keep them in perfect cutting shape. The best of edges will quickly dull if it strikes metal, glass, or Formica. A wooden cutting board makes the best cutting surface. And, if a slip occurs, a proper cutting board is safer for the user. Frequent use of a Victorinox sharpening steel will keep blades in tip top working condition. All straight-edge knives need steeling to keep their edges.

How to "Steel" a Knife
1. Hold the steel firmly in your left hand with the guard positioned to stop the blade should it slip.
2. Hold the knife in your right hand and place on top part of steel as shown.
3. Raise back of blade one-eighth inch.
4. Now, moving the blade only, draw it across the steel in an arching curve, pivoted at your wrist. The blade tip should leave the steel about two-thirds of the way down.
5. Repeat the same action with the Blade on the bottom side of the steel. Always maintain the same pressure and angle on both sides of the steel.
6. Repeat five or six times.
When a sharpening steel no longer does the job, it's time to take the knife to a qualified knife sharpener who will place a new edge on it. This, along with use of the sharpening steel, will give you many years of sharp, safe blades.
Please note that electric knife sharpeners can be harmful. They have to be used carefully as they remove too much metal, can harm the temper of the blade, and most important can change the factory-applied edge angle.
How should I store my knives?
Safety is the biggest concern of storage, both to the user and to protect the knife's edge. Choices include a knife magnet, knife block, drawer insets, and also individual knife protectors.

These shears arrived very quickly and appear to be new...a bargain given that Cutco charges $90 for them.I'd lost my original pair which of course showed up as soon as the new pair arrived. I love these shears. They are easy to clean and will cut just about anything. My original pair is probably 15+ years old.I ordered the new ones as soon as I was convinced the old ones were lost. That is how much I love these shears.

After searching stores looking for a knife set I began researching online.I found this set and was a bit reluctant. They didn't come with a knife block, they didn't have wooden handles, and the brand wasn't ringing a bell. But they were rated so highly, and the comments so positive, I decided to take a chance. They are AMAZING!Manufactured by the company that makes Swiss Army Knives, they are beautifully made. These three knives will do virtually anything you need done in the kitchen, so you don't really need more knives. They have excellent weight, good balance, and the grip feels ergonomic. While priced at the low end for good knives, you feel you are using the Mercedes of knives. This is a great set for anyone who loves cooking or quality. And as an aside, I was happy to have to find an alternative to the knife block.I got a strip magnet, and it is so much better!

Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 14-Piece Block Set

I got this set for my mom for Christmas. She is a "cook", no t a chef, so the knives are fine for her purposes. Better than what she had. The biggest disappointment was the wood handles, I don't know if they were not treated or what, but right out of the box they were dry and rough. They felt like they would give you splinters. My mom put some oil on them and it helped, but had I seen the handles as they were before purchase, I probably would not have purchased them. Or at least made the handles more presentable myself. But - I paid $25 for them and can't really complain too much.

Like the title says, I do not use a block to store my knives, but do use these safes. I live fairly close to a restaurant supply and can pick these up (and did) for more than the cost here on Amazon. I do not hesitate reaching into the knife drawer and I no longer have to warn my guests about being careful. I also know my blades are being stored well after I hone them and put them up for the night. I have them in all sizes even down to my paring knife. The closure is quite safe as well- 2 tabs (1 for the smaller size) that you really need to press on in order to open. Those of you with young children helping may breathe a bit easier as well when their little hand goes into the drawer.

Yeah, I purchased these knives from Ronco, not amazon but since I always shop here and look for reviews here I just want you people not to waste your hard earned money. Here's my short review. All of the knives contain the following:
1.The Handles are all cheap plastic, by cheap I mean eventually it will
chip off or break.
2. The blades themselves are nicely polished. But every single blade in
my 25 piece set is DULL. Perhaps this is why they supply you with a
knife sharpener. I can run the blade across my skin.
3. Oh yeah, The pointy end of all the knives are also dull. Once again I
I can run it against my skin without injury. Yet they slice and dice
everything on the infomercial.
4. The whole kit is made in China, We all know what some of the quality
is like from some of their products.
5. If you buy these direct, they rape you on shipping. It cost us [...]
to ship it here to my home. The knives were [...]. I am going to send
these back ASAP so now is gonna cost another [...]! A total RIP
OFF! Learn from my stupid mistake, and don't bother doing business with RONCO.

This knife was bought out of jar on the counter of the Robertson's Meats main store in OK. I got it as a whim needing to cut a summer sausage in the car. What a surprise...it has been great and I have bought 3 more.

What is the best thing in a knife is how long it keeps it's edge and how well it sharpens. This knife beats any other brand in this category.Yes the handle is simple and small.

No other knife let's me slice a block of hard cheese paper thin without much thinking about it and other's always drift. The beauty is in the thin blade...it is not flimsy...thinness of the blade is what makes the knife and yet it is durable.

Product Description:
The small size and sharp point of this paring knife make it ideal for handheld and small cutting chores, such as vegetable peeling or mincing herbs. An obligatory kitchen addition, this knife carries its weight mostly in its comfortable polypropylene handle, which allows you greater control. R.H. Forschner knives are made by Victorinox with the same quality as their Swiss Army knives. The handle of this paring knife is slightly larger at 4.25-inches, than other Victorinox paring knives. Like other cutlery in the line, this 3-1/4-inch paring knife is stamped from high-carbon steel that won't stain. A special tempering process is used to produce an edge that can be resharpened over and over again, so the knife can keep its original sharpness. This item carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturer's defects. Hand-washing is recommended.

J.A. Henckels 8 Piece Stylus Block Set Review

J.A. Henckels 8 Piece Stylus Block Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This J.A. Henckels 8 Piece Stylus Block Set is a decent set at an excellent price, but do read the specs carefully before you order so that you're not surprised. This set has a modern appearance due to the stainless steel handles, and those have a nice ergonomic feel. But these are not the "Made in Solingen, Germany" like the Four Star, Five Star, Pro "S" (and others), which are forged from a single piece of high-carbon stainless steel. These knives are made in China from stamped stainless steel, as indicated in the specs.

An explanation: J.A. Henckels has two distinct brands. The "Zwilling J.A. Henckels" brand is known as "The Premium Brand," with products that are mainly made in Germany (mostly forged blades) or Spain (for mid-range knives, forged or stamped). The "J.A. Henckels International" brand is "The Value Brand" division that produces less costly, mostly stamped blade knives, often made in China or Taiwan.

If you're looking for some top-of-the line German-made knives from J.A. Henckels, check out the J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star Cutlery, or perhaps the J.A. Henckels Twin Signature 7-Piece Knife Block Set.

Please understand that this is not a put down on this J.A. Henckels 8 Piece Stylus Block Set, which in some ways is better than some other knives crafted in Germany, for the Henckels quality is still there. Just don't be surprised to see the blades marked "Made in China."

Cold Steel Kitchen Classic Block Set (13 Pcs) with Kraton Handle and Oak Block Review

Cold Steel Kitchen Classic Block Set with Kraton Handle and Oak Block

I bought this knife set for my daughter as she was moving into her first new home. My intention was to buy her a set of knives which would last a lifetime. My son (who owned a knife store franchise) suggested the Cold Steel set and so I made the purchase. I was very pleased with the quality of the knives both handles and steel. I would suggest these knives as a moderately priced knife set for anyone and intend to get a set for myself.

These blades are ice tempered and then precision flat ground for maximum cutting power. All models in the series come with a razor sharp edge that lasts and lasts, and some have serrated edges uniquely appropriate to the tasks they were designed to do. The handles are, in a word, terrific! Carefully designed to ensure a strong, secure, yet comfortable grip, they feature a stiff Zytel core on the inside, with a softer, deeply checkered Kraton exterior for a the kind of non-slip grip that must be felt to be appreciated!

Victorinox 8-Piece Knife Block set Review

Victorinox 8-Piece Knife Block set
Average Reviews:

I was using a Wustof Classic chef's knife to do everything in the kitchen, and wanted a set of "beater" knives that would provide some other functions, and also so I wouldn't yell at guests for mistreating the Wustof.I chose the Victorinox set over lower priced sets such as Chicago cutlery because nearly every knife in this set was rated #1 (over much fancier knives) by Cook's Illustrated. In fact, when Cook's Illustrated rated knife sets, I guess victorinox didn't have one available, and their recommendation was to buy a block and populate it with Victorinox models.
In a head to head comparison with the Wustof, the Victorinox chef's knife was a few ounces lighter, and the balance was more blade heavy. The Victorinox out of the box was as sharp as the Wustof, which is about halfway between professional sharpenings. that is to say, the victorinox is impressive right out of the box.The slightly different balance takes a little getting used to if you've been using big german steel all your life, but it's not bad.The victorinox has a great handle design and is better for two handed mincing.
The selection of the knives in this set is perfect.there are no useless knives to pad the number in the set, this has everything you'd need except a cleaver. It also offers a 10" slicer instead of the 8" slicer offered by chicago and other, cheaper sets, and has very good quality shears.
It's hard for me to think of these as beater knives now, until I remember the price. If I accidentally burn my place down and have to get new knives, I would probably just buy this set and not replace the Wustof, then maybe add in a cleaver and the 5" mini chef's knife from Victorinox.
These knives are an incredible value.

I even make my own bread! Why did I wait so long, suffering with the bread knife that came in the knife set I got for our wedding 35 years ago? This knife is an excellent addition to any cook's kitchen. High quality steel, sharp as a razor, beautifully balanced with a handle that fits a woman's hand. Definitely worth the price.

Wusthof Classic 23-Piece Block Set Review

Wusthof Classic 23-Piece Block Set
Average Reviews:

This is an incredible set of incredible knives. They are so sharp that a near miss counts. That's not hyperbole (much). What I mean is: You have to be careful with these because one could cut you to the bone before you knew it. I had a full set of Chicago Cutlery for years, but I grew tired of having to constantly sharpen them. The Wusthof knives are a dream to use in comparison. Sharpness is useful because you can cut finer with less pressure. They are simply easier to use than less sharp knives because you don't have to work so hard. They are also very well balanced. They are expensive. I earned some looks from my spouse until she started to use them, at which point she said, "Now I understand." This is a quality product, not a Chinese knock off. If you can afford it, do it. You won't be disappointed.

Chicago Cutlery Professional 10-Piece Knife Block Set Review

Chicago Cutlery Professional 10-Piece Knife Block Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Short version:Fair quality knives, very reasonable price, good company, good warranty - overall a very good value. But don't expect the quality of the professional lines from Henckels or Wustof

Long Version: I have a lot of experience with kitchen knives and I recently purchased a set of these on-line.For $25-30, this is a pretty fair set for a very good price. It's better than the junk my girlfriend was using, so they've become her regular set.(Although when they arrived, they were all in need of sharpening. - This was not a problem for me, as I used to do that professionally)

Understand what you're getting: This set is *not* up to the quality of the Wustof or Henckels professional lines (yes, theymake cheaper lines too). These Chicago Cutlery knives may be forged, but that's only part of the processes that are involved in making a superior knife. The steel used in these knives is not the same high quality, and the tempering process is different than from the high-end lines.

But honestly, for most people, the Wustof or Henckels are way more than what they need. And you're talking more like $400 - $450 for a set.

If you've owned a top of line set from Henckels or Wustof (again not they're cheaper stuff), and you use them enough to appreciate the differences in quality...this won't satisfy you.But for anyone else, this is probably a big step up from what you have.

Wusthof Wood Block and Steel Review

Wusthof Wood Block and Steel
Average Reviews:

It's a shame when people rate products based on the defective example they received.Sure, consistency in workmanship is a consideration, but don't think bad things don't happen in transit.
That said, I really like this block. It is exactly what I needed and I couldn't beat the price (free with purchase of 3-peice starter set). And, it HOLDS MY 9-INCH BREADKNIFE, as well as the 3-peice starter set and steel. It came to me in great shape and feels solid. It's a lot heavier than I thought it would be.I plan to add kitchen shears and leave the other 3 slots open for knives I decide I need later.
The only thing missing is a place to put steak knives. You'll need a separate steak-knife block or a larger block to accommodate steak knives.I'm single and don't need many knives.I gave four stars instead of five for the small size that may not work for many people, and as stated above, the lack of space for steak knives.
