Miracle Blade III 11-pc. Knife Set Review

Miracle Blade III 11-pc. Knife Set
Average Reviews:

I would not recommend this set for any reason.I ordered this set and the one offered by ron popeil for the same price. The Popeil set had more items and was just a more substantial product. My miracle III knives have rust stains and the small chopper is so thin that it is nicked.Plus, the sets were $39.00 when they were made in the USA.Now they are made in china and sell for the same price.Do not be fooled by the wonderful television ad's.the set from popeil is far superior and the same price.

update:10 mar 05.these people are impossible.my knives are RUSTING.stainless steel!!!!!!!!i called miracle blade two months ago.they were going to send me a new set. That was after being cut off 3 times.their computers were down.i called them again the other day and was told their computers were down.finally i called and said i wanted to place an order and it was a miracle, the computers suddenly came up.i finally demanded a supervisor, none available.i was told i would have to pay $29.00 for the warranty.i laughed.i had to pay $14.99 for shipping.they are just sleezy.look into sharpkut II.they are great knives.i have had one for twenty years.i thought that miracle blade was the same company.NOT.sharpkut II knives are made in the USA and don't rust.trust me.stay away from miracle blade.

Yeah, I purchased these knives from Ronco, not amazon but since I always shop here and look for reviews here I just want you people not to waste your hard earned money. Here's my short review. All of the knives contain the following:
1.The Handles are all cheap plastic, by cheap I mean eventually it will
chip off or break.
2. The blades themselves are nicely polished. But every single blade in
my 25 piece set is DULL. Perhaps this is why they supply you with a
knife sharpener. I can run the blade across my skin.
3. Oh yeah, The pointy end of all the knives are also dull. Once again I
I can run it against my skin without injury. Yet they slice and dice
everything on the infomercial.
4. The whole kit is made in China, We all know what some of the quality
is like from some of their products.
5. If you buy these direct, they rape you on shipping. It cost us [...]
to ship it here to my home. The knives were [...]. I am going to send
these back ASAP so now is gonna cost another [...]! A total RIP
OFF! Learn from my stupid mistake, and don't bother doing business with RONCO.

Fred Ouch Toothpick Holder, Gray Review

Fred Ouch Toothpick Holder, Gray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Holds 37 toothpicks from my count. A fun miscellaneous item for the person who has everything. I'm particularly fond of the hole in the neck and the middle of the forehead. Color of mine is somewhere between bone and gray - not white, but not bad (still looks good, I like the shade). I wish the toothpicks went in a little deeper. As it is, the points in some holes on mine just barely stick in and a jarring shake can knock a few out. Sometimes it's more practical to just keep my toothpicks in the box they came in. It's kind of turning into a paperweight.. Still a fun idea.

this is the most expensive knife set i ever purchased so i wasnt too sure what to expect.while the knives do work; maybe i'm using the wrong ones to cut the wrong things.slicing a green pepper the other night turned out to be a real pain because the knife wasnt cutting through the back skin of the pepper.again, it is probaby just my lack of expertise, but i was suprised that these where not nearly as sharp as some of my cheap knives. For the price i paid for this set (a retail value of $130, i got at amazon xmas sale for $29.99) i'm not going to complain too loudly.I'm just glad i didnt shell out the whole $130 for them.

Victorinox 8-Piece Knife Block set Review

Victorinox 8-Piece Knife Block set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was using a Wustof Classic chef's knife to do everything in the kitchen, and wanted a set of "beater" knives that would provide some other functions, and also so I wouldn't yell at guests for mistreating the Wustof.I chose the Victorinox set over lower priced sets such as Chicago cutlery because nearly every knife in this set was rated #1 (over much fancier knives) by Cook's Illustrated. In fact, when Cook's Illustrated rated knife sets, I guess victorinox didn't have one available, and their recommendation was to buy a block and populate it with Victorinox models.
In a head to head comparison with the Wustof, the Victorinox chef's knife was a few ounces lighter, and the balance was more blade heavy. The Victorinox out of the box was as sharp as the Wustof, which is about halfway between professional sharpenings. that is to say, the victorinox is impressive right out of the box.The slightly different balance takes a little getting used to if you've been using big german steel all your life, but it's not bad.The victorinox has a great handle design and is better for two handed mincing.
The selection of the knives in this set is perfect.there are no useless knives to pad the number in the set, this has everything you'd need except a cleaver. It also offers a 10" slicer instead of the 8" slicer offered by chicago and other, cheaper sets, and has very good quality shears.
It's hard for me to think of these as beater knives now, until I remember the price. If I accidentally burn my place down and have to get new knives, I would probably just buy this set and not replace the Wustof, then maybe add in a cleaver and the 5" mini chef's knife from Victorinox.
These knives are an incredible value.

The knives were made pretty poorly. The metal on the steak knives stuck out farther than the wood and felt weird in your hand the metal edge between the wood on all the knife handles was rough and unfinished. The metal gets rust spots if it even sees moisture. The seller was fabulous in all ways but these knives were not.

Our unique compound angle is not seen in many knives. This angle tapers from the spine of the knife to the edge to allow for a sturdy, yet extremely sharp edge while it also tapers from the bolster to the tip to give the knife strength as well as flexibility.

Product Description:
From the inventors of the famous Swiss Army knife comes a line of fine cutlery designed for accomplished and aspiring chefs at work or in the home. The Forged line gets its name from the construction of the knives' blades, which are hot-drop forged in Germany from high-carbon stainless steel. High-carbon steel provides maximum sharpness and edge retention. The knives are finished in Switzerland and ice tempered to sustain sharpness longer, even after resharpening. They feature a single-piece full-tang construction for stability and balance, as well as bolsterless edges for use of their entire blades and ease of sharpening. Triple-riveted for durability and ergonomically designed to provide optimum weight, balance, and comfort, the Plastic-Over-Molded (POM) handles will hold their shape and not crack or separate from blades. The Victorinox Forged collection is an extensive range with open-stock pieces as well as handy and versatile sets.
A great home starter set, this 7-piece set includes a 3-inch parer, 3-inch shaping knife, 5-inch serrated tomato and utility knife, 8-inch chef's knife, a sharpening steel, and kitchen shears. Each piece handily stores in the included 9-slot hardwood block, angled to keep everything easily accessible. All Forged cutlery should be washed by hand for best care, and Victorinox covers each piece with a lifetime warranty against manufacturer defects.

From the Manufacturer
Who is Victorinox?
Although Victorinox is known the world over as the creator of the Original Swiss Army Knife, the company started out in 1884 as a cutlery workshop. By the time company creator Karl Elsener delivered his first pocket knife to the Swiss Army, his cutlery business was already booming. Over the next century, Victorinox cutlery became a top-rated choice among professionals worldwide, with over 300 blades to offer.
Victorinox knives have regularly appeared as highly ranked and recommended kitchen tools in Cook's Illustrated, Men's Health, The Cincinnati Enquirer, New York Magazine, and Natural Health, just to name a few. In 2009, the company announced a partnership with professional chef, Daniel Humm, of Eleven Madison Park in New York City. In addition, building on the success of its cutlery business, Victorinox has brought all the same quality and expertise to a wider range of products and accessories, including other kitchen tools, pocket tools, watches, luggage, and clothing.
What is a forged blade?
Forging is the process by which metal is transformed into a knife's shape. A forged knife requires more metal to make it, so it's usually heavier and thicker than a stamped knife and, in many cases, is consideredthe stronger and superior blade. Forged knives usually have a steel "bolster" at the beginning of the handle and a "tang" that runs through the handle's center. All Victorinox forged cutlery is "hot-drop" forged, which is a high-quality, time-tested method of manufacturing. Steel is super heated and placed under a multi-ton forging hammer, where it is hammered into the shape of the die. The hot metal is placed on the bottom part of the die and the top part of the die drops onto it with great force, causing the metal to spread into the shape of the die. This is only the first of many steps required by expert craftsmen. Additional processing, tempering, grinding, heat treating, polishing, and more, are the reasons why forged knives cost a bit more. Much more effort goes into their creation than in the creation of stamped blades.
What knives do I need to own?
Knife choice or selection is determined by many factors--size, function, style, and preference. The most important factor is function. Different knives have different uses. It is important to use the proper knife for a specific task, since proper knife selection and the use of a proper-sized, sharp knife make for safe cutting. General kitchen tasks and the knife to use for them are as follows:
Paring: The most common to own and use, a paring knife is generally for small cutting jobs and peeling of vegetables or fruit. The blade size is usually from three to four inches. Choose the shape and size to fit your hand. Since this is one of the more versatile knives, owning more than one is recommended.
Chef's: The most important tool and essential to every cook, a chef‘s knife is most often used in a rocking method to mince, dice, and chop vegetables and herbs. This one is known as the chef's best friend.
Slicer: Most commonly used to slice meats, poultry, and seafood, the slicer is an important companion to any host or hostess.
Boning: As its name suggests, a boning knife is used to trim or remove meat and fish from the bone.
Bread: Designed with a special edge, a bread knife makes easy work of cutting through crusty bread, pastries, or any item with a crust and a soft interior.
Fillet: Most often used by pros and seasoned home chefs, the fillet knife is used to fillet meat and fish.
Cleaver: An important addition to any collection, a cleaver is often used to cut or chop through bones.
Santoku: This knife combines the features of a cleaver with a chef's knife. The curved blade helps the rocking motion used for chopping, and the wide blade works well for scooping sliced food off a cutting board and for crushing garlic. The santoku can also be used to slice meat and has a narrow spine for making thin cuts.
Utility: An all-purpose knife often referred to as a sandwich knife, the utility knife peels and slices fruits and vegetables, and even carves small meats.
Shaping: With its curved blade, a shaping knife is great for small precision cuts where control is essential, such as peeling, trimming, or garnishing.
What are the different knife edges and what do they do?
Straight: The vast majority of Victorinox knives come with a straight or fine edge. This means it has a perfect taper along the blade and no serrations. It is designed to cut without tearing or shredding.
Serrated: An edge designed with small, jagged teeth along the edge.
Scalloped: A blade with waves along the edge generally used to cut breads with a hard crust and soft interior, as well as tougher-skinned fruits and vegetables.
Granton: This edge has hollowed-out grooves or dimples on the sides of the blade. These grooves fill with the fat and juices of the product being cut, allowing for thin, even cuts without tearing. Even with the grooves, these are still straight-edge knives and can be honed with a sharpening steel.
How should I care for my cutlery?
After use, knives should not be allowed to soak in water. The best practice is to hand wash and dry them immediately. This is especially true if they have been used on fruit or salty foods, which may cause some staining, even on stainless steel. Most knives require very little maintenance and it is worth the effort to protect your investment.
Though Victorinox knives are dishwasher safe, this is strongly discouraged. The dishwasher's agitation may cause damage. Additionally, harsh detergents can be harmful and cause pitting and spotting on the blades. The handles may also discolor and develop a white film with constant use of the dishwasher. Plus, intense heat associated with dishwashers is not good for the temper of the blade.
How do I keep my knives sharp?
All quality knives require proper maintenance to keep them in perfect cutting shape. The best of edges will quickly dull if it strikes metal, glass, or formica. A wooden cutting board makes the best cutting surface. And, if a slip occurs, a proper cutting board is safer for the user. Frequent use of a Victorinox sharpening steel will keep blades in tip top working condition. All straight-edge knives need steeling to keep their edges.

How to "Steel" a Knife
1. Hold the steel firmly in your left hand with the guard positioned to stop the blade should it slip.
2. Hold the knife in your right hand and place on top part of steel as shown.
3. Raise back of blade one-eighth inch.
4. Now, moving the blade only, draw it across the steel in an arching curve, pivoted at your wrist. The blade tip should leave the steel about two-thirds of the way down.
5. Repeat the same action with the Blade on the bottom side of the steel. Always maintain the same pressure and angle on both sides of the steel.
6. Repeat five or six times.
When a sharpening steel no longer does the job, it's time to take the knife to a qualified knife sharpener who will place a new edge on it. This, along with use of the sharpening steel, will give you many years of sharp, safe blades.
Please note that electric knife sharpeners can be harmful. They have to be used carefully as they remove too much metal, can harm the temper of the blade, and most important can change the factory-applied edge angle.
How should I store my knives?
Safety is the biggest concern of storage, both to the user and to protect the knife's edge. Choices include a knife magnet, knife block, drawer insets, and also individual knife protectors.

Henckels 16020-000ckels International Forged Synergy 13-Piece Knife Set Review

Henckels 16020-000ckels International Forged Synergy 13-Piece Knife Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I have been using this 13-piece set of Forged Synergy knives for about 8 months, and we couldn't be happier with them. They are well made, well-balanced, have beautiful handles, a nice finish, and hold a very sharp edge--we've sliced tomatoes with all of them. If you're buying your first set of fine knives, these WILL hold up to the Henckels reputation for quality.

Now regarding what some others have said, I'll just add my two cents. There is a "Forged Synergy" and a "Fine Edge Synergy" series, and the main kitchen knives in those sets are NOT the same (though the steak knives appear to be so). The forged series has a metal tine that runs all the way through the handle with the black grips riveted on. The J.A. Henckels International Fine Edge Synergy 13-Piece Block Set is totally different--see the Amazon photos and descriptions for yourself. Yes, this Forged Synergy set is also made in China (not Spain or Germany like some of the more expensive Henckels sets), but the quality is still excellent and should far surpass most users' expectations.

Regarding rust spots, we've had none. However, there are two main types of stainless steel: one is harder and slightly less stain resistant; the other is more stain resistant but slightly softer. That means that you give up a little stain resistance to have a knife that holds a sharper edge longer. I think that's much more important than having to clean an occasional rust spot off if it were to occur.

There are only two minor faults I find with this set (that didn't stop me from buying it, however). The kitchen shears are excellent quality and cut great, but the two parts should be easily separable for cleaning purposes. You'll see this in newer shear designs, and it's not a feature that would add to the cost. Also, the black finished knife block will eventually show wear and tear from missing when inserting knives into the slots. I'd have prefered a standard maple block. Lastly, for a few dollars more, I'd recommend the 16-piece version of this set which includes three more knives for about the price of one more (J.A. Henckels International Forged Synergy 16-Piece Knife Set).

These are the best knives that I have ever had.Sure they will get dark spots over time, but if you wash and dry them thoroughly after you use them, they will stay sharp and rust free. The dark spots is the carbon working out to the surface, and is common on all high carbon blades.I also will spray some cooking spray on a paper towel and coat them lightly a couple times a year.

The only reason I didn't give them a 5 star rating is the price.I guess that comes with the Kitchen aid name.

I got this set for Christmas a few years ago as I had asked for a knife set.It does not stay as sharp as I would like.I would recomend getting them professionally sharpened every 6 months. They are comfortable to use and easy to clean. The steak knives were not really all that sharp though and I had a hard time getting them as sharp as I wanted.

I cook quite often and I feel this set was not superior enough for my needs so I am getting a Mundial set and will probably give the Chicago set away.It is not a bad set, but if you are a foodie and hate sharpening knives, save up and get something of higher calliber.

Ken Onion 7-Piece Knife Set with Block Review

I bought this block set a month or so ago, and I love the knives!!Razor sharp, good balance, very comfortable and secure grip.I use the serrated slicer daily on home baked bread, I can slice the bread potato chip thin if I like. The Chef and utility knives are really nice and work super. The paring knife took some getting used to because of the angle of the blade to the handle.A short learning period though, and now it seems like an extention of my hand. The bamboo block is a nice piece of craftsmanship, and with the attractive knife handles sticking out looks great.Note the angles cut into the sides of the block itself, they let the knife rest in a completely safe and secure manner.I added the 7" Ken Onion Santoku, and it fit in an empty slot like it was made for it.The included steel has an angled finger guard that is the correct angle for honing your knives, reducing the guess work.Bottom line, if you are comfortable spending this much money for kitchen knives, I recommend this set completely. They replaced a 30+ year old block set of L.C. Germain knives, I held on to two of those and they fit in the block as well.

The products arrived promptly, and really well packaged. The outer sellers box kept the inner product box undented. The knives came wrapped very well, and were perfect when I opened them very carefully. The block is heavy as it should be, and that was packaged so it didn't shift at all.The separate Santoku knife was packaged surprizingly well, in a really handsome box.I am completely satisfied with these knives, the block, the quality, sharpness, fit and finish of this set is completely perfect.High quality tools to last a long, long time.Totally happy with Amazon.com once again! One baffling thing...the two screwdriver like blades in the handles of the kitchen shears.I am completely at a loss to figure out what they are for.The shears disassemble for easy cleaning as well, a side benefit for sure.I'm glad I bought this knife set!
